The First Project

4242 Mostly Moved In-14

We’re in the new house, and aside from a potentially traumatic plumbing issue that was quickly averted by throwing money at a nice plumber named Tyson, we resumed our decorating with a laundry room curtain project.

Here’s the new set! We need to do something to the window to keep the fabric from fading, but, for now we’re just happy with the cheerfulness.

Note the very attractive and clean reburbished Maytag washer! There is a matching dryer on the other side.

Taking a chance on a mail-order area rug…

Direct Home Textiles Four Seasons® Collection Textured Stripe Black Rug | Solid & Striped Rugs.

Rugs USA had a sale going on with free shipping and cheap rugs. Exactly what I needed! So I purchased this indoor/outdoor rug for a steal and hopefully it will be delivered about the same time we roll in to Phoenix.

With all white couches, light beige walls, and a greyish tiled floor, I think the stripes will lend a graphic weight to the floor but will still act like a neutral — allowing me to play with color in our accessories without having to think “will this go with the rug?”

Feeling Grey

Maybe it’s the crazy Arizona sun that beats down on us most of year, making me want to shield my eyes for the brightness and cast them upon something that cools their overstimulated nerve bits, but for the last few months I’ve been crazy about grey. From the Rosette Quilt in heather gray at Anthropologie to the staid whimsy (take that English language!) of Michael Miller’s Quarter Dot Grey fabric, I’m thinking the color palette for a good chunk of the house is going to be based in grey.

It’s such a nice neutral: cool in color, easily blended with bright shades like aqua (my other new favorite) and orange (my forever favorite) and green (my other forever favorite).

Nap Time!

This is as staid as whimsy can get.

I think the cream plaster walls, mostly white furniture, and general cool palette of the house will lend itself to grey so nicely. Particularly if we keep to interesting greys — greys with texture and print.

PLUS the poodle is greyish. So there you go. I like grey. And navy. Oh! And yellow!

Amy Butler Towels: Hello Cuteness!

One of the things I’ve been weeding through before the move is our towel collection. Aside from two really nice Anthropologie towels I hoarded for two years before allowing them to be used, all our towels are bedraggled and sad.

To replenish, I want these Amy Butler’s in orange. Bed Bath and Beyond!!!!

Custom Address Stamps

There is something about the new address and it’s repeating numbers (4242) that makes me crave stationary. However, I rarely require stationary since I’m pretty committed to technology. I DO send a lot of cards and thank you notes though.

I came across a post on SFGirlByBay today about these really pretty calligraphic address stamps from Primele .

Although Primele’s stamps aren’t quite what I’d like for myself, I love the idea of having a beautiful custom rubber stamp for the new house address. Imagine how much nicer it will be to mail out cards, the few bills we can’t pay online, and just about everything else, with a lovely stamp? Plus, using ink pads is just plain fun.

A quick Google search later and I came across Simon’s custom stamps. I can create my own, upload it, and voila! a custom stamp. Dude, how cool is that?

Solar Outdoor Tree Lights

Ever since I glimpsed the grapefruit and tangelo trees in the backyard of the house, I’ve been thinking I wanted to put up some lights in the lower branches to make the evenings a little more sparkly. I’ve been shopping around for solar string lights and came across these from Plow and Hearth.

Phoenix is sunny, so I think using solar would be an energy-saving solution. Not only that, but they don’t need me to turn them on and off. Win!

I’d really like to find some that were a little more hefty, something more along the lines of Italian cafe lights. And some path lights for the front yard as well.

Will keep searching!

Living with Dogs

I’m getting ready to move to a new little house in a month with my husband and two dogs. I’m excited. The house is an older one with it’s own little quirks that will be fun to tackle.

It’s a project house. One that lends itself to figuring out shoestring ways to make the space work, be attractive, and that is livable for two spoiled dogs, provides a space for me to work remotely for my job, and that won’t drive my husband crazy. It’s also a rental — meaning we can’t change anything except our own belongings.

There is something about our new place that has inspired me. It’s a blank slate. With tile floors, plaster walls, and nothing particularly striking — it’s best feature is it’s size and the light that makes it feel like it has possibility. From the simple front porch to the tiny bathroom to the big back yard with citrus trees, the house is one I’m excited to shape into a home through sewing projects, thrift store finds, IKEA, and a lot of problem solving.

I thought it would be nice to begin documenting my plans, projects, and findings as the world at 4242 (an address a friend of mine swears may provide the secrets to the universe … or just lottery picks) unfolds.
